I have a fantasy of spending a night at the St. James Hotel which is just a hop, skip and a jump, from the Mississippi river in Red Wing, Minnesota. Melanie and I took a little tour through the commons areas and I became smitten. With the hotel - not Melanie. I'm sure Crabby Dave has that base covered.

The interior has a feeling of old-world elegance. The kind you read about in period romance novels. I don't generally read romance novels, I'm more of a John Steinbeck kind of person, but sometimes Melanie will coerce me into reading a trashy novel out loud on our road trips. (Am I blushing?)

The St. James Hotel was established in 1875 and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. (According to their website, Red Wing, Minnesota was the world's largest wheat market in the 1870's. )

Red Wing is packed full of shops, restaurants, historical architecture and recreational opportunities. You could just park your car in the parking lot and spend a day or two exploring things within walking distance.
