Commerce by Luck or Appointment in Welch, Minnesota
by

on Sat 28 Mar 2009 07:48 AM CDT

We didn't have an appointment, and luck wasn't with, us when Melanie and I discovered the Welch Trading Post in southeastern Minnesota, but we'd be willing to try again. We pressed our noses up against the window to get an idea of what treasures were waiting inside.

We got a big kick out of the innovation of the proprietors. Now, I haven't met the owners, but I have a feeling I'd like them. I suspect, by the mousetrap cardholder pictured above, that they lean toward quirky. And who doesn't like that?

We also appreciated the self-serve firewood business nearby which counts on the honesty of its customers. It made me feel good about myself. You know, because if I were buying wood, I would be completely honest about paying for it. I'm pretty sure.

I'll tell you where we were lucky, though. We hit the jackpot when we ordered the Reuben soup at the Trout Scream Cafe. Zowie. It was an amazing concoction of beef broth, cream, sauer kraut, caraway seeds, and onions all simmered together, then topped with a square of toasted rye bread with swiss cheese melted over the top. I ordered only a cup of it, but you can bet your sweet, uh, whatever, that I'll be ordering a big bowl of it next time!

Even The Town's Cat and Dog Welcomed Us to Welch, Minnesota
by

on Tue 24 Mar 2009 12:09 PM CDT

Now here's a town that knows how to make you feel welcome! I mean, look at the smile on that dog's face. The whole town gets in on the act. I had never seen Welch, Minnesota before, but I thoroughly enjoyed the drive there. The twisting, turning descent into the valley reminded me of Vermont. Wonderful!

Welch is a precious little burg, smack-dab on the Cannon River. We ate at the Trout Scream Cafe, and even the other out-of-town guests there greeted us like old friends.

It looks like the Cannon River provides a livelihood to the local residents, what with canoeing and tubing on the river, and snow-skiing just down the road at Welch Village Ski Resort.

It's hard to come up with the right words for a little town like this. Charming, sweet, magical. Oh heck, just get out the Thesaurus and come up with a few words on your own . . .

Cambodian Temple Near Hampton, MN
I've posted a new video from a road trip Melanie and I took through Southeast Minnesota in the Red Wing area. The variety of things we saw was astounding. I'm grateful to guitarist Edward Klamm for providing the soundtrack. Ed is a song-writer and instructor in the Twin Cities. Click here to view the video and wonder, just like Melanie and I did, "Am I really in Minnesota?"

The Comfort of Family (Sort of) and Food at the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis, MN

My parents came into the city from southwestern Minnesota to see one of my brothers perform in a production of Godspell, so we "city kids" got together with them for brunch at the Black Forest Inn on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis.

Talk about a great atmosphere for a bunch of opinionated German-Bohemians to get together. We were raised on pickled-pigs feet and sauer kraut, so the menu made the men in our family very happy. And talk about comfort food! My mom, Kasey, and I had the spaetzle covered in cheese. Oh my.

I loaned my camera to three year old Jayvyn to keep him busy until the food arrived. He has an eye for an interesting angle, but his weakness lies in portraits, as you can see in the photo of his great uncle Steve, below.

When I showed the family a photo Jayvyn had just taken of me, which I could clearly see was unflattering, my twin brother looked at it for a moment, then looked at me and said, "nice goiter." Ouch.
Jayvyn is officially banned as the family photographer. Until he celebrates his fourth birthday, at least.

Mother Nature Bats Last

By Patrick Moore
After this past week's blizzard and cold snap, we are again reminded of who is really in charge.
It leads me to conclude that should be about the business of learning to stay warm with the help of the earth's natural heating system.
I just posted a video to you tube about that very subject which you can visit by clicking on:
In just 4 minutes, you can learn about how a small town congregation saved $150,000 by switching to ground source heat 5 years ago. This is a video clip from a 2 disc video we are producing that resulted from the Green Economy Roundtable held at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in January.
If you are interested in ordering a copy of this video series, we are selling them for $15 (includes CD case & shipping). Let us know by replying to this e-mail and we'll send one out to you.
Next Thursday, CURE is working to turn people out for a meeting about Conservation Drainage at the Kilowatt Center in Granite Falls next Thursday March 19 from 7 - 9 p.m. More details later, but you can put it on your calendar. Sun Dogs in the Frozen Minnesota Sky
by

on Thu 12 Mar 2009 07:33 AM CDT

Goodness it's cold out! Again. Still, we're hanging on by our fingernails, white-knuckling it through the next few weeks because spring is just around the corner. Yesterday I had the privilege of seeing a couple of the most fabulous sun dogs I've ever seen. My co-workers were just as impressed as I was. We were gathered at the window remarking on it.

And pretty soon, this is where we'll be.
See? This is the kind of thing that makes Minnesota an interesting and exciting place to live.

on Tue 10 Mar 2009 06:02 AM CDT

We're supposed to get a wintry mix of freezing rain and snow today - a forecast that can put anyone down in the dumps. So, how about if we let little Emma, a weekend guest at my house, make us feel a little bit better about life?

Stay safe on the roads today!

Patrick Moore Testifies Before MN Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee (Audio)
by

on Wed 04 Mar 2009 05:49 PM CST

Thanks to the invitation of Sen. Dennis Frederickson (R New Ulm) and our dear downstream colleague Scott Sparlin (CCMR) CURE had the opportunity to testify on Monday March 2nd before the MN Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee (Chaired by Sen. Chaudhary) about all the good work going on in the Minnesota River.
I drove 6 hours to deliver 3 minutes of testimony which you can hear by clicking on: http://knowmoore.com/cure.html (You can hear Sen Chaudhary talk about his recent trip to the Minnesota River)
I think this three minute audio clip pretty much sums up why we are all working together for the river and I would appreciate your reactions to it.
And, as long as you're at it, would you mind giving us your anonymous feedback about CURE through an on-line survey we have devised? It will take 5 minutes and it will help our Board discern where we need to focus our future efforts.
You can access the survey by clicking on:
Thanks for the feedback,

Spring Fever Tearing Through Minnesota
by
Minnesota Country Mouse
on Tue 03 Mar 2009 07:52 AM CST

It's been a long winter. I mean, a really long winter. People are getting blue! I don't remember such enduring and oppressive cold snaps in the past - and I've been around for a while. I'm back to longing for a visit on a porch with a stout cup of coffee. Well, I don't mean I would be talking to a cup of coffee. That would be silly. I'd just like to have a stout cup of coffee in my hands while I visit with a friend. The friend could be stout. That would be ok.

Even now, I can imagine how the air would smell. And don't you just love new leaves, all shy and barely peeking out? And those noisy birds who just won't shut up, even though it's only four in the morning? That would be ok too. For now.
I guess it's alright to get restless. I mean, Minnesota and weather isn't just about temperatures. It's about thrills. I've never wanted to live anywhere else. But come on Mother Nature. Snow is just so yesterday.
