A Wicked Good Day with 3-Year-Old Jayvyn at Linden Hills in Minneapolis, Minnesota
by

Frankly, when Kasey asked if I was available to take three-year-old Jayvyn for a day, I was frightened. He's one of those children who does the silliest things to make adults laugh, but he's also a child who is very dramatic if he doesn't get what he wants. What was I going to do with him for an entire day?

Turns out, the answer was at Linden Hills in Minneapolis, Minnesota where we started the day by crawling on rocks at the shore of Lake Harriet. We collected feathers and threw dandelions into the lake.

From there we took a break at Dunn Brothers where Jayvyn helped roast coffee beans. He loves grinding coffee in an antique grinder I have at my place. One time, when we were in the grocery store, he saw rows of whole beans in their plastic dispensers and he yelled, "Hey! How do you work these things? Can I have a quarter?" Hmmm. Coffee beans dispensed like gumballs. Now, there's an idea.

We headed back to Lake Harriet and caught a ride on the trolley, then went back to my place for lunch and to watch the movie, Bambi, which he was sure he wasn't going to like, but did.

Toward the end the day we entertained ourselves by throwing those helicopter-like seeds from the balcony and watching them twirl and spin to the ground. We polished off the evening with a light supper at Houlihan's, where he wore his cloth napkin like a cape on his back, then came home and fell asleep to the movie, Shrek. That's our boy!

Stimulus Funds Find Their Way to Minnesota - Remember the CCC & WPA?
by
Minnesota Country Mouse
on Sat 23 May 2009 09:26 AM CDT
Federal stimulus funds are finding their way to the far reaches of Minnesota. There is a historic precedent for these measures. I know there are those who would argue that our government should not be investing in our own country, but what better time to create jobs than when people are unemployed? Here's how it looks to me, given the current situation.
jobs = paychecks paychecks = purchases purchases = profits profits = company growth company growth = more jobs more jobs = a country back on its feet
If you look around our state, you'll see monuments to the depression CCC projects like the swayback bridge and picnic shelter in the lower level of Alexander Ramsey Park in Redwood Falls, Minnesota.

And I remember seeing the letters WPA embedded in sidewalks in my little hometown. The bridge being repaired in the photo above is a WPA project located in Faribault, Minnesota. Weren't these beautiful, enduring, and functional projects good, sound investments?
I have learned from CURE, located at Montevideo in western Minnesota, about an opportunity to take advantage
of some Federal Funds for Summer Youth Employment workers if they can scrape
together some funds to hire a supervisor to work with them. (The Feds will pay
for the workers, but not for their supervision).
CURE is asking individuals to consider making a donation to CURE to
help to pay for a youth worker supervisor. They need about $1,500 -- or 15 members partnering at
$100 each to make it possible for CURE to leverage another $3,000 in Federal
economic stimulus funds. Contact: rivervoice@cureriver.org
With this extra labor, they can get a crew out
making improvements to the environmental education, eco-tourism and recreational
infrastructure of the region.

I may have it all wrong, but it seems like money well-spent, to me. I believe it's time we used our hard-earned money to benefit regular folks like you and me.

Majsdac Hills Greenhouse and Landscaping - The Fruits of a Hardworking Family Near Granite Falls, Minnesota

My friend, Cindy, was on the quest for a new tree the weekend I visited her at Granite Falls in southwestern Minnesota. After some deliberation she said, "I know where I want to look!" Although she hadn't been there before, she had heard of a greenhouse out in the country belonging to to the family of one of her students.
I have never been at a greenhouse on someone's farm before, so I certainly didn't know what to expect. I was very surprised to see a spectacularly landscaped yard with a little creek running through it. Now that I think about it, I wonder just how they managed that.

We found trees alright. Plenty of them. Cindy was looking for an ornamental of some kind and it sounded like she found just what she was looking for. The yard was decorated with a variety of antique farm machinery, but inside the greenhouse, it became clear how versatile these designers are.

They have fountains and decorative metalwork for a more formal garden, or they can provide homeowners with the looks of a country garden.

For the rest of us who like to get our hands dirty and fiddle around in our own back yards, they have a large variety of annual and perennial flowers and the smarts to tell us how to plant them.

It was really quite impressive. "These guys are hard workers," Cindy told me. And in rural Minnesota, you can't receive much higher praise than that!

New Video Featuring Alexander Ramsey Park in Redwood Falls, Minnesota
by
Minnesota Country Mouse
on Thu 14 May 2009 07:52 AM CDT

When I was little, my dad used to pack us kids into the old green station wagon (a vehicle which often chased me in my nightmares) and we'd head to Redwood Falls, Minnesota for a drive through Alexander Ramsey Park. It was a reprieve from the wide-open prairies and the drudgery of the bean fields we kids got to know so intimately. Ugh.
I shouldn't say that. I can remember when we needed to purchase some major item for the farm, instead of going to the bank, dad would say, "I'd better sell some beans."

But, I digress. Alexander Ramsey Park is the largest municipal park in the state and magnificent, with a zoo, overlooks, the Redwood River, historic WPA projects, paths, ballparks and playgrounds, and camping. Whew! And it has a paved road that curls through the landscape and used to terrify me when I was little. I couldn't look away from the steep slope on one side or the other. Thrillsville.
I've accumulated a number of photographs of the park and put them together in a video, which also includes a brief look at downtown Redwood Falls and a couple of places one can go to eat. Click here to view the video. The music has been provided by Edward Klamm from Minneapolis.

Alert from CURE! Change in Canoe Trip this Weekend
by
Minnesota Country Mouse
on Tue 12 May 2009 04:46 PM CDT
By Patrick J.Moore
rivervoice@cureriver.org
Despite my highest hopes and boldest predictions, it does
not appear that we are going to get the rain that is needed to make the
Yellow Medicine River navigable.
So we have decided to cancel that trip and
instead encourage everyone who was thinking of going on the Yellow Med to meet
this Saturday May 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Lentz
Landing on the Chippewa River. Paul
Wymar of the Chippewa
River Watershed Project will be your guide. CURE volunteers
Scott Wilson, Gary Lentz and Danny Kurkiewicz
will also be there to assist you.
Other guided trips on Saturday May
16th include:
John White with Exchange Students on the
Minnesota River. Meet at Prien's
Landing by 1:00 p.m.
Greg Wyum and Yours Truly
on the Lac qui Parle. Meet at Earthrise
Farm at 1:00 p.m.
Brian Wojtalewicz and Scott
Tedrick on the Pomme de Terre. Meet at Trinity
Lutheran Church in downtown Appleton by 11 a.m. Thanks to Brian and
CURE volunteers for going ahead of time last weekend on the PdT to clear away
deadfall. Everybody tipped except Brian. He wants everyone to know
that for this trip, you should bring a dry bag with a change of
clothes. Experienced paddlers are encouraged to step up to the
PdT challenge. Beginners will have a better time on the Chippewa or
Minnesota.
After we are all done paddling we will meet at the Watson
Lion's Park for food, music and storytelling. The Watson Lion's are
serving up BBQ's and beans from 4 to 7 for a $5 suggested donation. Feel free to
bring your own food, a dish to pass and something to drink. Camping is
free. Bring lawn chairs and instruments.
Duane Ninneman is getting his
History Talk together about how European and Yankee
religious movements influenced the white settlement of the Upper Minnesota River
Watershed. This will not be a debate of any kind, just a sitting around
and sharing what we know about who came to this area in the 1870's and
80's and what kind of religious communities they created. It is a
fascinating story for the intellectually and historically curious.
I am reading the Wordy
Shipmates by Sarah Vowell right now as a backdrop to this History
Talk. My, how interesting it is to be an American. A little bit of
introspection might do us all some good -- not to mention a relaxing float on a
river!

Lunch at The Grinder in Granite Falls, Minnesota
When I returned to work Monday morning, my co-workers asked me if I had a nice visit at Granite Falls in southwestern Minnesota. Ohhhhhhhhhhh yes! We got a late start Saturday morning after lazing around watching the movie Beautiful Girls, which happens to have been filmed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Cindy kept saying it was filmed in the midwest because people in the movie were wearing Wisconsin sweatshirts, but I didn't believe her. I completely missed it. When the credits rolled around, there it was. Thanks to the Minnesota Film Board. Good eye, Cindy!

We ate lunch at the Grinder Coffee House which has to be one of my all-time favorite coffee houses in the state. After that, we headed to the Yellow Medicine County Museum located on the edge of town, near the Minnesota river. Oh boy!

I took an awful lot of photos, so I think it would be best if you took a look for yourself. Click here to see the Granite Falls photo album. I was in heaven. I love history. The more local, the better.

Lucky for me, Cindy loves history too. Now here's the great part. The museum wasn't officially open, but we were allowed in to photograph relics (without my flash) and visit the newly finished preserved log cabin.

The door had been painted just that morning. We were very careful not to leave our imprint on this 1877 cabin.

I think I heard Cindy discussing a future visit for her grade school class. This newly spruced up museum not only looked great, but had a sense of well-ordered history. It's hard to describe the feeling one gets when surrounded by pieces of other people's past. It's feels almost spiritual.

Episode Four of MN Country Mouse Radio - Speaking of Minnesota Speakeasies
by
Minnesota Country Mouse
on Mon 04 May 2009 06:03 AM CDT
Bootleggers Supper Club, Granite Falls, MN
I traveled to Granite Falls, on the west end of the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, to visit my best friend from high school, Cindy. She knows I like speakeasies, so she agreed to a hearty meal at Bootleggers Supper Club on the edge of town. And man, did I have a meal!

I dined on center cut pork chops, smothered in mushrooms and a bourbon sauce. I was only able to eat half of it and thought I'd offer the rest to Cindy's husband, Bill, when we got home. "Look Bill," I said all pleased with myself. But when I opened the take-out box to show him, his reaction was not what I thought it would be. It was more along the line of having seen a severed head. I guess when people don't like mushrooms, they really don't like mushrooms!
He was, however, very pleased with the walleye sandwich Cindy picked up for him.
On Episode Four of Minnesota Country Mouse Radio, I get the chance to mention a couple of Minnesota speakeasies. We'll listen to music by Rick Jensen, a Minnesota native now performing on the east coast, and Edward Klamm, an amazing guitarist from the Minneapolis area.
The Tavern Speakeasy in the Archer House, Northfield, MN
Episode four also includes a reading of a poem by Minnesota writer, Audrey Kletscher Helbling from Faribault, Minnesota. Join us!
