My friend, Cindy, was on the quest for a new tree the weekend I visited her at Granite Falls in southwestern Minnesota. After some deliberation she said, "I know where I want to look!" Although she hadn't been there before, she had heard of a greenhouse out in the country belonging to to the family of one of her students.
I have never been at a greenhouse on someone's farm before, so I certainly didn't know what to expect. I was very surprised to see a spectacularly landscaped yard with a little creek running through it. Now that I think about it, I wonder just how they managed that.
We found trees alright. Plenty of them. Cindy was looking for an ornamental of some kind and it sounded like she found just what she was looking for. The yard was decorated with a variety of antique farm machinery, but inside the greenhouse, it became clear how versatile these designers are.
They have fountains and decorative metalwork for a more formal garden, or they can provide homeowners with the looks of a country garden.
For the rest of us who like to get our hands dirty and fiddle around in our own back yards, they have a large variety of annual and perennial flowers and the smarts to tell us how to plant them.
It was really quite impressive. "These guys are hard workers," Cindy told me. And in rural Minnesota, you can't receive much higher praise than that!
