View Article  Angie and I Catch a Ride with Ol' Rock and Rollers to Fort Snelling in Saint Paul, Minnesota / A Landmark With a Dubious Past

My friend, Angie, and I allowed ourselves to be picked up by some forty-ish rockers to ride along out to Fort Snelling in Saint Paul, Minnesota.  It was quite a ride.  We sat in back and got a chance to see a whole lot of air-guitar and head-banging.

It was actually kind of fun and reminded me of back in the days when being spontaneous was second nature and we understood how to be in the moment.

The point of our trip was to attend an open house and step behind the veil at the Upper Post and tour the grounds which are in desperate need of preservation.  Wee doggies, it was hot!  Hello summer.  I'll be whining about the heat until it's time to complain about the cold again.  But, I digress.

I was surprised to see how run down these historic buildings are.  It was kind of sad.  Still, I have mixed feelings about anything related to war, and this fort is not without its dubious past.  I can't reconcile my feelings about the treatment of Minnesota's indigenous people which took place here.  There are those who would argue the land should be returned to Native Americans. The truth is, I never looked at the other side before.

I guess history is history.  The important thing is to remember all of it, and not pick and choose only the parts we care to remember.  These buildings are some of the oldest in the state, from the earliest part of the 1800's.

While touring, we were circled by a number of buzzards.  I don't think they were interested in us, necessarily, but something in this overgrown and wooded area had captured their attention.

We  heard about the African-American buffalo soldiers who were stationed at the post 1882 and 1888 and about the many other soldiers.

The open house was sponsored by the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, in partnership with Fort Snelling State Park, the Minnesota Historical Society, Hennepin County, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Mississippi River Fund.

As for those rebel rock and rollers Angie and I were riding with, well, I know it may give the wrong impression but I'm going to tell you the truth.  They ended the trip with an ice cream cone.  How cute is that?

View Article  A Trip to Nirvana and Lunch at Java River in Montevideo, Minnesota

My friend, Cindy, and I drove to Montevideo for my annual pedicure at the Nirvana Salon.  This was only my second one, and I resisted the first.  You know how you get an idea in your head about who you are?  I have always considered myself a no-nonsense kind of person when it comes to pampering myself.  Cindy, on the other hand, has always been a girly girl.

I was able to reconcile my ambivalence, however, when I considered that my self-indulgence was actually good for the local economy.  And besides, I loved all that personal attention.  Some of us don't get nearly enough physical contact, so I guess maybe I can scratch if off my "want" list and pencil it onto my "needs" list.  And, I have pretty toes now.  I let Cindy choose my nail color, a rich red like ripe cherries.

Exhausted and starved from all that pampering, we walked across the street to Java River Coffee House for lunch.  Java River is a local mecca for creative, organic, socially conscious earth mother types.  It's the kind of place not typically found in the far reaches of Minnesota - although their popularity seems to be growing.

I ordered my favorite item on the menu, a chicken gyro made with happy, locally raised chicken.  Java River supports regional agriculture, serving local products when possible.  Java River is the only food establishment I have known with a mission statement.

Although under new management, Java River continues to support the local arts.  I think it would be wonderful to head back across the state to Chippewa County to take part in the Meander Upper Minnesota River Art Crawl October 2nd, 3rd & 4th. You can find information about this and other creative endeavors at Java River, where a display rack is jammed full of fliers about local artists and events.

Autumn would be the perfect time to enjoy a treat in Java River's cozy courtyard.  Well, perfect for me, anyway.  I noticed there were others who didn't mind the heat and enjoyed sipping cool drinks in the shade.  I'm afraid if I had tried that, I would have have sweated the polish right off my pretty little toenails.

View Article  The Historic Swensson Farm in Chippewa County, Minnesota - Set for the Movie Sweetland

Do you see a face in the orb floating above this sentence?

Once again, my friend, Cindy, predicted an orb if I took a picture, this time of the porch at the Historic Swensson Farm in Chippewa County, Minnesota, and once again, an orb showed up on my photo.  She wouldn't come anywhere near the porch and worried when I disappeared behind a bush while photographing this turn of the century, 22 room home.

Cindy and I have been enjoying the delicious terror of the supernatural since we were in junior high and tried to get Anne Frank to talk to us through Cindy's little sister, Mary, during a seance.  I don't know if Anne Frank ever showed up, but we were able to make Mary cry.  That was something.

Cindy fussed the whole time we were at the Historic Swensson Farm and was certain the place is haunted (see this link) because she was feeling noodly.  Noodly?

I, on the other hand, loved the way it felt at Swensson farm.  It's beautiful there, but I'm willing to admit it seemed possible we weren't alone.  I suppose I should mention that we snuck onto the grounds because we had no other choice.  The gate was locked.  Old habits are hard to break.  Cindy and I have been noodling our way onto unattended properties for decades.

Since the farmhouse was locked up tight, I had to photograph the interior through a closed window, but I got a sense of what I'm missing.  Showing me a house like the Swensson home without letting me inside to look around, is like putting a piece of white cake with white frosting in front of me with a stout cup of coffee, and then telling me I can't eat it.

Many of the scenes from the movie Sweetland were filmed here at the Swensson farm.  I thought it was lovely and I wanted to stay.  Cindy, on the other hand, couldn't wait to leave.

Oddly enough, she loved the little family cemetery.  My little sister, Crazy Annie, says the tombstones were created from an old mold still stored in the basement of the house.  Annie also said the house is filled with the original furniture household items.  Oh boy.  I'm still feeling bad about not getting inside that big old brick house.

Visit the museum Sunday afternoons Memorial Day to Labor Day 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment.

View Article  I Finally Got to Visit the Sibley County Museum on Main Street in Henderson, Minnesota

Sibley County Museum

  Main Street
Henderson, Minnesota  56044
(507) 248-3434

I got to do something I've been wanting to do for years!  I finally got to tour the Sibley County Museum on the main street of Henderson in the Minnesota River Valley.  Melanie and I were given a private tour by Arlene Busse who appears to know everything there is to know about the house, the inventory, and the region.

While Melanie asked questions, I started taking pictures and I didn't want to stop.  This museum is different from many others because you're walking among the artifacts.  And the feeling of visiting someone's home from 1884 was icing on the cake for me.

One can see from the architecture than no expense was spared when the house was built.  We got to see a lot of family photographs and beautifully preserved dresses specific to the site.  There is a room dedicated to Joseph R. Brown and the Native Americans heritage.  Another is dedicated to historic articles from past wars.  It's a big place and there are a lot of other attractions that I can't think of right now.

The only area that was roped off was the little kid's room on the second floor which was brimming with antique toys.  I was trying to imagine what it must have been like to be a small child there.  The ceilings are very high and the rooms are large.

One of the first things I noticed when I walked into the museum was the striped wooden floor.  The wood work was very dark, except for the parts where artisans painted a burled wood pattern back in the 1800's,

I was especially excited to see the original stenciling on the dining room walls.  One  upstairs bedroom was filled with beautiful feminine antiques.

You can see more photos from my visit to the Sibley County Museum by clicking here.

The Museum is open to the public for tours Memorial Day and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. June thru October and by appointment. Genealogy is by appointment only.

Admission fee is $2.00.

View Article  The Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis, Minnesota - Perfect for a Rainy Saturday

We recently had  the perfect rainy Saturday and I didn't want it to go to waste.  You know how it is this time of year.  People are generally scrambling to enjoy the season before it turns cold again and I feel a responsibility to get out there and join them.  But since it was raining out, I was off the hook.

I've become an indoor person.  I like the feeling of being sort of cocooned in a cozy setting, so when Melanie called to go do something, I suggested lunch at the Black Forest Inn on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis, MN.  I think the weather had zapped her usual over-abundance of energy and sticking close to home suited her just fine.

The first time I ate there I was with my parents and a bunch of my brothers.  We sat in the back room decorated with a mounted deer head and I got the impression that this was a joint that leaned toward serving men.

But this time, the moment we walked in the door, my impression changed.  It was the peonies sitting on the table in the light of a nearby window that got me.  We were seated in a booth overlooked by painted elves, or gnomes, or something done in the kind of rich colors that warm the cockles of one's heart on a rainy day. (The phrase 'warm the cockles of one's heart' refers to the ventricles of the heart (Latin: eugeneis leonardis).  I didn't know that!!

I ordered the spaetzle and cheese again, being the ultimate comfort food, and Melanie had a type of  dish with an asparagus mousse topped with stuffed pasta and asparagus spears.  The presentation was beautiful and the flavor was outstanding.

Did you know they have a beer garden?  Of course, it was unlike any beer garden I've been in before, but dining there would be exactly the kind of outdoor activity I could relish.

Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes.  On Episode Six of Minnesota Country Mouse Radio, I interview little Jojo Johanneck who talks about writing, directing and acting in his very first video The Ghost of Cowboy Jones.  He also explains the idea behind the video Everybody Poops.

Melanie and I visited Faribault earlier this year and regretted not having more time to visit their historic downtown, so another trip is in order.  We were happy, though, to have the opportunity to visit with Audrey Kletscher Helbling, a folk blogger and writer for Minnesota Moments Magazine.

More people than ever, it seems, are getting out on the rivers of the Upper MN River Watershed.  For CURE, this is a dream come true!  See photos from past River Trips by clicking on:  http://picasaweb.google.com/CURERiverPhotos

Granite Falls Chamber of Commerce Director Nicole Richter took her maiden voyage on a CURE organized trip on the Chippewa River last Sunday May 31st.

She fell in love with the experience of floating ever so gently and silently through the rich perfumed riverine forest where we saw owls, orioles and otters in the course of a 3 hour float from Hwy 40 Lentz Landing to Watson Lions Park.

The Chippewa River Watershed Project is organizing another trip on the Chippewa on Saturday June 13 starting at 9:30 a.m.  For more information call: 320-269-2139 ext 120 or email jennifer@chippewariver.com Check out the flyer and waiver form

We are looking ahead to Saturday, June 20th when the 8th Annual Riverfest Rendezvous and the first ever Fiesta Tri-Festa will be held.  Get your running shoes on, your bike in gear and your kayak in the water and head to Montevideo's Lagoon Park for River Fun!
Thanks to the contributions of 17 individuals and businesses, we made our goal of raising $1,800 so we could hire a youth supervisor to work with student workers this summer!  More details to follow, but if you know of a someone between the ages of 16 to 22 who meets the income guidelines and who lives in the Upper MN River Watershed that could use a job this summer working with CURE, the Earthrise Farm Foundation and the Milwaukee Road Heritage Center in helping improve environmental education and eco-tourism infrastructure, let me know.

I think it's rather odd.

I'm not really an outdoor summer kind of person, because hard as I try, I can't seem to keep my hair from sweating and my makeup from running.  It's not pretty.  But spring and fall seem to work for me.

Minnehaha Falls

It's not really the falls that draws me there, although I like looking at it and I think it's beautiful.  But I think I love it there because I get the best of a few different worlds.  I get nature, I get architecture and history, and I get fed.

Sea Salt Eatery is open April-October offering a varied menu of fresh seafood.

I grew up on a farm surrounded by flat prairie and a sky that sometimes seemed way too big.  It could be pretty lonely there, in spite of having eight siblings, and most of the parks we visited left me feeling lonely too.  But Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis leaves me feeling nurtured, and who doesn't like that?

Minnehaha Depot

If you're my friend or a relative I like, I'm probably going to talk you into going there.  Hear that, Cindy?

Jayvyn Longing to See The John H. Stevens House

It's actually a little more fun than visiting the Lakewood Cemetery near Lake Calhoun, and you know what an amazing experience that is.

Oh, and if you visit Minnehaha Park, be sure and wear comfortable shoes.
