View Article  Blackbird Restaurant in Minneapolis a Bit of a Surprise

After scouring the local fliers and magazines for the perfect spot to have breakfast on Sunday morning, Melanie called me with her latest discovery.  She read the merits of the Blackbird restaurant located on 50th street between Aldrich and Bryant avenues in South Minneapolis and made her choice.  The block the restaurant sits on is home to Patina and The Malt Shop as well.  It's a lovely neighborhood.

The article mentioned casual, country fare, so I assumed we would be sitting at a table covered with a red and white checkered tablecloth.  Uh, no. But I'm not complaining.

The decor was completely unexpected.  This has to be the most thoroughly eclectic setting I've ever dined in.  It was fabulous. After all, who would think of mixing a large collection of antlers with those pretty Chinese lanterns? I'm not saying Architectural Digest would approve, but we were in it for the fun.

The restaurant, itself, was a smorgasbord for the senses.  And the food!  I had a serving of wholegrain pancakes served with sesame butter and maple syrup.  Sesame butter?  They were fabulous.

I like to order pancakes for breakfast because they go so well with a good cup of coffee.  That morning, I ate pancakes with a great cup of coffee.  The waitstaff was so goodnatured, you could tell they really enjoyed working in this deliciously odd place.

Oh yes, Blackbird, we'll be back!

View Article  Melanie Discovers Carver, Minnesota

Melanie called me up all excited about a little river town she had discovered called Carver.  "Oh my gosh!  You've got to come with me to pick up a piece of furniture I bought at an antique shop there."

Uh, ok.  Twist my arm.  So off we went, leaving Melanie's husband, Crabby Dave, to his own devices.

We arrived in this little old town with nice big trees and lots of wavy rooflines.  Many of the streets didn't bother trying to put on airs with fancy, shmancy curbs and gutters.  It was altogether charming.  We ate lunch at Lisa's Place Bar and Grill after checking out the bar across the street which was absolutely frenetic with activity.  Those folks were having just a little bit too much fun for our taste on a hot Sunday.

Lisa's Place was much more laid back and a little more our speed.  The front and back screen doors were open and we were happy as clams there.   I don't drink, but I couldn't help appreciating the way Melanie's beer looked with the light shining through it.

We mosied on down to the antique store where her purchase was waiting to be picked up.  I'm not a shopper, but that doesn't prevent me from appreciating the wares.  I eventually got too warm and crossed the street where I had seen a perfect little gazebo.

I waited there in the shade of those big old trees enjoying the cool breeze and watching tons of motorcyles buzz down Main Street.  Now this is what Sundays are made for.

I was perfectly content.

View Article  Summer Storm Warnings in Minnesota

There's nothing like a good wall cloud to lift my spirits.  I love the sense of impending doom. Not my own, of course.  I think that's why I get such a thrill out of the approach of threatening weather.  I don't want anyone to get hurt or anything to be damaged, but I like to imagine I'm right at the edge of danger.  Clearly, I've never actually experienced the real thing.  Not like my friends, Cindy and Bill, from Granite Falls where I snapped these photos.  They've survived a deadly tornado and two floods.

How many times were we nine kids hustled into our ancient stone-walled basement while a storm screamed across the prairie, snatching at our wooden shingles and rattling our windows?  Mom kept us calm, but where was our old dad?  Standing out on the front steps watching the weather.  We were always relieved when he finally joined us in the cellar and we could be assured of his safety.

Men standing outside watching threatening weather.  Nuthin' new about that.

It took me a while, but I figured out why my original recording had a chipmunk in slow-motion sound to it.

I wasn't using a sampling frequency that was a multiple of 11025 Hz (22050 Hz, 44100 Hz etc.).

I am humbled by an article fellow folk blogger, Audrey Kletscher Helbling, has written about adventures with my traveling buddy, Melanie, for a brand new publication, called Midwest Mix magazine, published in Springfield, MN.   And what an honor to be included in their flagship edition!  As far as the photographs of Melanie and me, well, I think we look thinner and younger in real life.

Audrey also includes some of the places and people I've written about, so take a look and see if you're mentioned.  Fun, right?
